Homemade Cheez-its

Snack

The same addictive flavor, but these homemade cheez-its are fresher than fresh and you can adjust the recipe just the way you like. Change the type of cheese or spices and these will be your own cheez-its.

I know, I know, we already have enough snacks. I made this recipe, nevertheless, as it’s always good to have a back-up plan in place, just in case you forgot to buy snacks. These homemade cheez-its can be ready to snack on in under 45 minutes.

Key Ingredients in This Recipe

Ingredients Homemade cheez-its, plus baking sheet and rolling pin.

You’ll find the complete list of ingredients and exact quantities in the recipe below.

  • Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese – preferable yellow (if you want the same color as the real Cheez-its), also preferably shredded by you, don’t buy pre-shredded.
  • All-purpose flour
  • Butter – salted or unsalted
  • Turmeric – for color reasons. You can also add sweet paprika to have an even darker orange color.
  • Salt

How to Make Homemade Cheez-its

Make the dough by mixing cheese, flour, turmeric and salt in a food processor

Step 1 – Make the dough. Transfer cheese, flour, turmeric and salt to the bowl of a food processor. Blend until combined.

Add the butter that you cut in smaller pieces first. Add water and pulse until the dough comes together.

Step 2 – Transfer the dough to a floured surface and roll out to a thin rectangle (about 1/16″).

Use a pastry cutter and cut the dough into 1-inch squares. You can use either side of the pastry cutter, but the one with the beveled wheel will create the fluted edges similar as the cheez-its.

Transfer the squares to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and use a skewer or chopstick to poke holes in the middle of each cheeze-it.

Roll dough into a 1/16" thick rectangle and cut 1-inch squares.
Bake cheez-its on baking sheet in an oven of 325 degrees F. and bake for 15-20 minutes.

Step 3 – Place the baking sheet in an oven of 325 degrees F. and bake for 15-20 minutes.

My advice is to check at 15 minutes and then add 1-minute increments in cooking time until you reach the correct color/doneness.

A minute too long can mean that you burn the cheese crackers.
